Hanauma Bay

Just east of Honolulu on the southeast tip of Oahu is the beautiful Hanuma Bay Nature Preserve. Once a volcanic crater eroded by ocean waves, Hanauma Bay is now a picturesque cove with clear, aquamarine waters, a stunning beach and the best snorkeling on the island.

The spectacular array of marine life that live and flourish in Hanauma Bay is an experience for locals and visitors alike, so swimming and snorkeling is popular and the gentle waters of Hanauma Bay make it easy for people of all ages and fitness levels to enjoy it. For those visiting the islands, snorkel gear and lockers are available for rent on location.

The summer months are best for exploring the colorful fish and abundant sea life in Hanauma Bay. Tang, butterfly fish, sea urchins, moray eels and honu, the amazing green sea turtle are just a few of the wonderful sea creatures in the bay. The sea turtles stay near the reefs in shallow water, so you'll probably find yourself swimming beside one.

Turtles are comfortable swimming with people, but stay at least 10 feet away and give them room to surface for air. If they're annoyed, they'll make an expression similar to a yawn and if agitated, they'll make a flipper swipe over the forehead. The honu is on the list of endangered species, so always remember that it's illegal to touch one.

Hanauma Bay went through restoration and is now officially a nature preserve, so it's important to respect the delicate eco-system of the sea life and cove by not littering, touching the coral or the marine life. A parking, entry fee and introduction video is required to help maintain the natural beauty, but it is well worth it to experience Hanauma Bay. Come early, as the parking fills up fast!
