The St. Regis Princeville Resort used to be host to two championship golf courses, the famous Prince Course and its twin sister course the Makai course. The Prince Course has since closed down for renovations as it transitions to a private course, but the recently renovated Makai Course remains an amazing golf experience for those visiting Kauai’s Hanalei Bay.

Makai Golf Course

The Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort, first opened in 1971 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Nearly 40 years later he revamped the course by restructuring the bunkers with G-3 Silica sand, improving the course layout and introducing Seashore Paspalum turf grass to all the fairways and greens. With more tee boxes, bunkers and an upgraded practice facility, there’s never been a better time to visit Princeville at the Hanalei Bay.

Noteworthy Holes

This premier 18 hole 72 par golf course features 4 tee tiers, Red, White, Blue and Black to accommodate players of all skill levels. Here are some of the more noteworthy holes that can be found on this course.

Most Scenic Par 3

The Makai Golf Course’s 7th hole treats you to 213 yards of Hanalei Bay’s classic scenic coastline. The stark contrast between the verdant green foliage lining the ravine, the craggy black lava rocks down below and deep blue of the ocean make this one of the best views on the course.

338 Yard Par 4 Birdie

The Makai Course’s 14th hole provides an excellent opportunity to boost your score card. This 338 yard par 4 allows you to reach the green with a single hard drive from the tee box. If you’re looking for excitement, hang right to golf pass a cliff and brave 8 bunkers to the green.

567 Yard Par 5 Finish

If you’ve had the courage to brave the other 17 holes at the Makai Golf Course, this beautiful 567 yard par 5 makes for an excellent finish to a fun course. If you feel up to the challenge, you can attempt an eagle by shooting over the tranquil blue pond before the green circumventing the rest of the fairway and cutting a significant amount of yardage from your game.

Find Adventure in Princeville

In addition to its famous golf course, there are many outdoor activities that guests and visitors alike can enjoy when they aren’t playing on the majestic green fairways of the Makai Golf Course. The Princeville Ranch offers a scenic zipline course through the lush green valley of Hanalei. Explore Kauai’s fertile countryside on horseback as the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) once did in the 1800s.  Whether it’s hiking Hanalei Mountain or traveling off road by jeep there’s no shortage of fun to be had in Princeville.
