The Kauai Lagoons Golf Club was designed by renowned golfer and golf course architect Jack Nicklaus, and first opened in 1988. Originally the host of two 18 hole championship golf courses, the Kiele and Mokihana, the club underwent renovations and recently reopened in 2011. The Kauai Kauai Lagoons Golf Club now boasts two nines, the inland Kiele Mauka (mountain) nine and the coastal Kiele Moana (ocean) nine. Together they create a 72 par 18 hole course that offers 7,156 yards of golfable terrain. The Mokihana course has been closed, with part of it being added to the new Kiele course, and the rest converted into luxury condos.

Details of the 2011 Renovation

Those who haven’t been to the islands in the last 4-5 years will be happy to learn that the legendary architect Jack Nicklaus himself oversaw the renovations of one of the most popular and scenic courses in Hawaii. The former Kiele back nine has been rebranded as the Kiele Moana, and now contains new bunkers, TifEagle putting surfaces, and three new holes. The red sand bunkers have been replaced with white silica sand. Once the final Waikahe (flowing stream) nine is completed, the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club will officially be home to 27 holes of championship golf.

The Kiele Moana Nine

The Kiele Moana Nine starts with a par 5 that opens up to the wide stretch of the Pacific, followed by a short par 4. These two starter holes are both new additions that came about with the recent renovations. These lead into the Moana Nine’s scenic fifth which makes use of the natural beauty of the land and sea to create the perfect photo op. The sixth hole will however take you 473 yards away from the ocean, as you battle trade winds to shoot over a cliff to the green. The 9th hole finishes strong with a sneaky bunker guarding the left side of the green while a tranquil inland lagoon flanks the right. All the while the island’s signature tradewinds will provide steady resistance to your approach to the final hole.

The Kiele Mauka Nine

The Kiele Mauka 9 features the resort’s signature hole, a 219 yard par 3 fifth that has you teeing off over a valley of guava and mango trees, in addition to being christened by Jack Nicklaus as “one of the best holes anywhere.” This hole is the third of a four hole sprint known to locals as the “amen corner” because once you pass one of these challengers you can’t help offering a prayer of relief as you keep up the marathon to the next.

Practice make's Perfect

Arnold Palmer once said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get” and it is with this quote in mind that Kauai Lagoon offers prime driving range and putting green to golfers of all skill levels. If you need to gear up, check out their local golf shop for clubs, drivers, bags and other equipment. Between the views, the grass and the shopping there is plenty to do at Kauai Lagoons Golf Club.
