In 1965 Laurance Rockefeller transformed a desolate black lava patch in one of the most inaccessible points on the Big Island into one of the most famous beach resorts in the world, Prince Resorts Hawaii. The Hapuna Golf Course is one of two championship golf courses at the Prince Resorts, the other being the famous Mauna Kea Golf Course.

Mauna Kea’s Little Sister

Constructed in 1992, Hapuna, which is Hawaiian for “springs,” is often considered to be the more forgiving than the Mauna Kea Golf Course, and is often nicknamed the “little sister” of the two golf courses at the Prince Resorts. Whereas the Mauna Kea Golf Course requires powerful shots and demanding accuracy at every hole, the Hapuna presents a more soothing relaxed golf experience overall. This makes it the perfect rest stop for a tour of the 7 golf courses along the Big Island’s Kohala Coast.

Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay Design

When Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay began designing the course in the late eighties and early nineties, they wanted to create a golf course that accentuated the island’s natural beauty and remained friendly to its environment. Today, this design intent is immediately recognizable, with the Pacific Ocean visible from every hole, and the snowcapped majesty of Mauna Kea making up the course’s back drop. The lack of visible cart paths allows the course to blend in with the surrounding hillside, making it the poster child of environmentally sensitive golf course design.

Hapuna Challenge

While this beautiful course may be easier on beginners, that doesn’t mean the course is not without its challenges. Instead of the accurate approach shots required at Mauna Kea, this course makes use of its elevation to place an emphasis on accurate tee shots. This 6,875 yard Par 72 18 hole golf course stands just shy of 700 feet above sea level, and can still give the pros something worth shooting for.

The Fan Favorite No. 11

This 510 yard par 5 eleventh plays with the help of the island’s tradewinds at your back. This makes it an excellent opportunity to boost your scorecard and take a drive for an eagle.

Signature Par 4 12th Hole

Placing the course’s elevation front and center, the Hapuna’s signature par 4 12th hole offers one of the best panoramic views of the ocean available on the island—on a good day you can catch Maui looming over the horizon.

Facilities and Services

In addition to the 18 hole golf course, Hapuna offers plenty of opportunities to hone your golfing skills, at its driving range, putting and chipping greens, and practice bunker. The full-service Pro Shop offers the latest in golfing gear and attire to ensure you’re well prepared to tackle the turf. Locker rooms, shower facilities, and the fitness center and spa will make sure you’re fresh and ready to take on the Kohala coast.
