Where to Stay in Kaunakakai, Molokai

Molokai has a lot to offer to those who want to experience the real Hawaii. Having the largest number of native Hawaiian residents, Molokai retains the laid back vibe and authentic Hawaiian atmosphere. Formed when two volcanoes fused together, Molokai is an island full of meteorological and geological differences. Its eastern end houses the steepest sea cliffs, some of the highest waterfalls in Hawaii and rich, verdant valleys that are home to different species of flora and fauna. On the west, you can find yourself transported to a different place as the weather is dry and arid, with plains sloping out towards smooth beaches and gentle sea.

Smack-dab between these two distinct sides of Molokai lies the capital town of Kaunakakai, a center that is unlike its megalopolis-counterparts in the other major islands. Here, nary a traffic light or a building over three stories will obscure your view of the surrounding sights. However, you're not far from modern comforts and services as the town has everything that tourists and locals need. Annually, there are about 85,000 tourists coming in to Molokai, and there is a hotel, a handful of B&Bs, condos, and other lodging establishments on the island to accommodate them. So if you're in the island for the beaches, the whale watching or the fishing, you won't be hard-pressed for accommodations in Kaunakakai. Here are just a few of the places you could try:

Hotels and resorts

In Kaunakakai, you won't be able to find any buildings higher than three floors. However, that doesn't mean you won't get to experience the thrills and the comforts of a hotel in Molokai. Hotel Molokai, the premiere hotel on the island, gives guests the experience of staying in Polynesian-style lodgings that is rife with the modern amenities and services that they need. Hotel Molokai is perfectly located on Kamiloloa Beach, near many natural spots such as the only barrier reef in Hawaii. Guests staying in the Hotel Molokai can find themselves near a bevy of areas and activities to explore. There's kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and cultural festivities all within reach of Hotel Molokai. There are many room types to choose from in Hotel Molokai, some having their own kitchen space and equipment so guests can prepare their own meals if they prefer. Nonetheless, if you prefer to sample authentic Hawaiian and Polynesian fare, head off to the hotel's Hula Beach restaurant. Room rates in Hotel Molokai range from $150+ to $250+ a night.

Condos

Aside from Hotel Molokai, there are other types of accommodations on the island. Somewhat a cross between a motel and an apartment are condo units that are for rent throughout the city. These kinds of accommodations are for those who want to be able to move around more freely yet have some of the basic commodities at hand. One establishment that's been making waves in the tourism industry is the Marc Molokai Shores Suites in Kaunakakai. Guests can rent these rooms for daily or weekly rates. Marc Molokai lodges are located comfortably near the beachside and from the private viewdeck of each unit, you can have a spectacular view of the neighboring island of Lanai. Most units have their own kitchenette area where you can prepare simple meals while an outdoor grill is conveniently located near the pool area. Marc Molokai suites are perfect for those who are under a budget. Other condos in Kaunakakai are the Paniolo Hale K3 near the Kaluakoi Golf Course and the Kepuhi beach, the Molokai Memories apartments with ocean and sunset views, and the Hale Kula one-bedroom condo among others. Many condos have room service but do not offer meals to their guests. Nonetheless, tourists can still get their fix of Hawaiian fare with the many food establishments nearby like the infamous hot bread from the Kanemitsu Bakery after 10pm. Other great eats in Kaunakakai and near many condos are Molokai Drive Inn, Molokai Pizza Cafe, and Kamoi Snack n Go.

Bed and breakfasts

Though Molokai is relatively the most affordable place in Hawaii to stay in, hotel and condo prices may still be a little too steep especially if you are on a very tight budget. Thankfully, there are a lot of B&Bs on the island where you can find a comfortable and secure place to lay your head on after a day on the beach or in the plantations. B&B rates and the amenities differ but some offer less than $100 rates. One fine example of a B&B is the A'ahi Place just outside the town proper of Kaunakakai. A'ahi Place cabins have kitchenette areas and basic kitchen appliances such as microwave ovens, coffeemakers, and fridges. Breakfast is the only meal included in the package and guests can avail of Continental as well as fresh fruit breakfast options in their room at their preferred time or schedule. Guests who are on a really tight budget can opt for the Budget cabins of A'ahi, with just a bed and a private toilet and shower for as low as $35 a night. Those who want total relaxation and peace can do so in this establishment as units do not have television and telephones. For those who want a more peaceful retreat, the Sacred Waters B&B run by Karen Noble offers not only screen-walled cabins so you can be closer to nature, but also yoga lessons on a private and secluded beach. Food served here are fresh and organic.

Tentalows

For those who really want to go rugged and feel the spirit of the real Hawaii, you can go camping on the beach and other designated areas throughout the island. Campsites can be found in the west end of Molokai in beaches and other areas where you can just pitch your own tent and save on accommodations. Pitching your own tent can cost you little or nothing at all when it comes to accommodation fees. However, be prepared for spending for your own food and transportation as these areas are quite a distance from the main town of Kaunakakai. However, for those who want to have some of the modern comforts, tentalows are also available in some areas of the island. The Beach Village in Molokai Ranch offers over 40 tentalows for guests. These tentalows are individual bungalow-like structures that have bathrooms, showers, and beds. Kaupoa Beach Camp also has 40 or so of these tentalows for guests who seem divided between experiencing the rustic side of Molokai and having the modern comforts of a private shower and a flushing toilet. However, these tentalows come with a hefty price per night as included are airport transfers, meals, and many outdoor activities such as horseback-riding, mountain-biking, hiking, and kayaking.
